The best well-known Finnish snow- boarding event carries it’s tradition at Ruka hill on 29th of April to 1st of May.

It gathers the Finnish snowboarding scene to take the best out of the last days of the season with great riding combined with unforgettable parties.

History of the event goes back to the early 90’s as a group of friends started a spring event to end their season together . The main reason was to have fun and ride creative obstacles. And that’s what Wappulounas is basically about – having fun – and to secure fun riding, it brings the most weird and creative obstacles to slopes, event format that is free of rules and very easy going athmosphere.

Even though the main focus of Wappulounas is still in snowboarding, it has grown into the most desired spring festival combining snow, skate, surf and live music together with a mellow athmosphere which is familiar to all who have experienced it.

The 5Star Burton Canadian Open Snowboard Championships are getting ready to make some pre-Olympic commotion on the Swatch TTR Tour at the “WinSport” Canada Olympic Park (COP) in Calgary, AB, Canada on February 1st-7th, 2010. A strong field of Canadian riders will get their chance to prove themselves against the international all-stars of snowboarding in the world class halfpipe and slopestyle course. On offer is a share of the $50,000 prize purse and up to 850 valuable TTR Ranking points.

The Burton Global Open series events are open to all riders and as such give rookies and newcomers the chance to ride with the best of the best. The Canadian Open will run qualifying rounds throughout the week starting 1st February 2010 and will finish off with spectacular finals on the weekend. Expect to see a lot of Canadian talent on site defending the nations honor such as Charles Reid, Dustin Craven, Jeff Batchelor, Palmer Taylor and Sarah Conrad. In addition, the Canadian Open halfpipe is already generating a great deal of interest, as the event is only a few weeks before the Olympics and the COP halfpipe is hailed to be in perfect shape. Many of the national teams will use it as training ground before the 2010 Games in February and you will be sure to see some class A riding at the Canadian Open.

The Swatch TTR Tour Champion battle on the women’s side is heating up as current World No.2 Sina Candrian (SUI) and World No. 3 Lisa Wiik (NOR) both have the possibility to go ahead of current leader Sarka Pancochova (CZE). Over the last years, Candrian has proved to be one of the most consistent girls on the Tour and has already performed well this season with a 2nd place at the Burton European Open and a 5th place at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam slopestyle formats. Also Wiik is known for posting solid results not only from slopestyle, but also from the halfpipe format and is keen to collect points in Canada to improve on her last season’s final ranking in World No.2 . Shelly Gotlieb (NZL) and Enni Rukajärvi (FIN) are also riders worth watching out for on the TTR Tour as they are both sitting in the Swatch TTR Top 10

With over 900 Swatch TTR ranking points in the bank, Peetu Piiroinen (FIN) will remain tour leader after the Canadian Open, while the World No. 2 spot currently held by Swiss rider Christian Haller, could be under attack. There is a tight battle for the spot between Haller, Norwegian rookie Stale Sandbech and Marko Grilc (SLO). Canadian Charles Reid, who is currently sitting in TTR World No.10, is no newcomer to this event and with a good placement he could climb to World No. 5 on the Swatch TTR Tour. However, he will have to watch out for World No 15. Antti Autti (FIN) who only has four results so far and Gjermund Baaten (NOR) who took 3rd place in the halfpipe at the 6Star Burton European Open this January.

For those who can’t make it to the 5Star Burton Canadian Open tune into the live webcast on www.trrworldtour.com and www.go211.com. TTR will of course keep you updated not only on the website, but also on Twitter and Facebook. News and photos will be also available on www.opensnowboarding.com.

Following the theme “Back to the roots” the After Show Party returns to this traditional location. No costs and efforts are spared to create the perfect ending for the snowboard event of the year.

At the Electro Clash Floor by Inntakt Dan Vans, Soma, Djane Saha and Lars Boob will bring electrifying mood to the audience. All that need a break come together in the chill out zone.

Billabong Air & Style in Innsbruck comes up with a top-class starting field on 05.12.2009 in the Bergisel Stadion: Travis Rice and World Champion Peetu Piiroinen are part of the comeback of the Big Air Straight Jump.

The change from quarterpipe to Big Air in the Bergisel Stadion made the elite of the snowboard scene curious. Getting a position in the starting field was in great demand but now the 16 pros are confirmed and they will be on parade on 05.12.2009 in Innsbruck.

Good chances to make the Ring of Glory his own has the Swatch TTR World Tour Champion 2009 and Winner of the second place of the Billabong Air & Style 09 Peetu Piiroinen (FIN). Again taking part in Innsbruck is his Finnish colleague Antti Autti who reached as well the finale at the last Billabong Air & Style and made 4th place. Torstein Horgmo from Norway had already good opportunities to win the Air & Style but it was always a near miss. Also taking part of the Scandinavian group: Mikkel Bang (NOR), Risto Mattila (FIN), Andreas Wiig (NOR) and Eero Ettala (NOR).

Austrian Werner Stock and Gigi Rüf also Elias Elhardt (GER) and Iouri Podladtchikov (SUI) are on top form this season already and they will make sure to reach a position among the best of the best. The Air & Style Champion of 2006 Travis Rice (USA) will return and will celebrate his premiere at the Bergisel. Superstar Mr. T. vs. World Champion Peetu Piiroinen maby? But Chas Guldemond (USA) will also start, he could ensure second place at the end of the Swatch TTR World Tour. They overseas competitors are Seb Toutant (CAN), Pat Moore (USA) and Tim Humphreys (USA). So all 16 positions are assigned and the fans can look forward for snowboarding at its best.

The new setup will challenge the rider a lot: they will start 50 meters above zero; with an inrun of ca. 70 meters and a slope of 45° the rider get on the ground again after 30 meters and an awesome trick. The best jump gives the winner 1.000 points in the Swatch TTR World Tour, the Ring of Glory and the biggest Part of the prize money of € 75.000 so be prepared !!!!

One of snowboarding’s biggest names from Europe, Antti Autti has penned a deal with NIDECKER special projects, NDK, to launch his own line of snowboards in 2010. The deal sees Antti take a more hands on approach with his snowboarding to align it with his new multimedia web site launch at the end of October Anttisworld.com.

Antti for NDK, or A+ as the project will be known, arose out of discussions with Nidecker’s Henry Nidecker and Robert Etienne on creating a line of limited edition boards for Antti under their special projects banner.

“With NIDECKER an opportunity arose to create something of my own, and have complete say in my boards and how I want them, from graphics to technology. I knew what NDK were doing for YES and I liked the program they had set up. I want to create an affordable line of boards that kids can get their hands on easily and be stoked about.” said Antti from his home in Rovaniemi.

“I want to create something unique and work with artists, musicians and anyone to add extra depth to what my boards are about and what I can offer snowboarding and hopefully people will be stoked about it. All this I am able to do with NDK as they have the ability, the know how and the technology to back it.”

The board line will feature a standard model that will be launched at trade shows around the globe next February, featuring art direction and graphics by Jim Zbinden of YES fame. Antti will also launch exclusive collaboration boards with select artists and musicians to be sold in limited number and exclusively through his online platform.

Look out for the limited YEAH-BABY-YEAH boards, painted by Jim personally, under Antti’s feet over the next few months. Antti for NDK will be branded with the A+ logo, identifying the association with Antti and the quality behind the manufacturing.

Check out the teaser for upcoming website for Antti Autti, Anttisworld.com:

Forty nations, 800 athletes, 220 media, 400 volunteers, 34 events, 15 sports and 10 days of the best winter sports action ever seen outside of the Olympics – it’s the greatest show on snow and it’s 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games!

No other event has had the same calibre of athletes including Olympic medallists, X Games medallists, World Cup winners and World Championship medallists.

The event opens tomorrow, Friday 21 August with the Opening Ceremony festivities in Queenstown. The action starts on Saturday 22 August at The Remarkables with the freeski slopestyle and continues through the week with snowboarding, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, freeskiing, curling, ice hockey, figure skating, winter triathlon and natural luge. The competition takes place throughout Otago from the coastal town of Dunedin, to the plains of the Maniototo to the towns of Queenstown and Lake Wanaka, high in the Southern Alps.

The new season of the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup kicks off like the last two years – with a halfpipe competition “down under”. For the third consecutive time, the world’s top freestylers open the winter in the 22-foot-halfpipe in Cardrona. A total of about 130 riders coming from more than 20 nations vie for the first World Cup points and the honour to place on the podium in New Zealand – at one out of four Halfpipe World Cups counting for the qualification road to the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. No wonder that an international high class starter field gets ready to drop in the halfpipe for the qualifiers on August 25th, 2009. One day later, the semi finals and the finals are on the program.

The entry list for the season’s first World Cup reads like the “who is who” of snowboarding. Led by the 2009 World Cup champions Jiayu Lu (CHN) and Ryoh Aono (JPN) some more big names will compete. The Chinese rising star will face 2002 Olympic Gold medallist Kelly Clark as well as her fellow US-team riders Hannah Teter and Gretchen Bleiler who finished 1-2 at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino. In addition, US-girls Jamie Anderson, Elena Hight and Ellery Hollingsworth will give their best.

But reigning World Champion Liu also has to have an eye on her countrywoman Zhifeng Sun, 2009 WCS runner-up Holly Crawford (AUS), Queralt Castellet (ESP) as well as Norway’s Linn Haug who placed third in last year’s season opener in Cardrona. Japan also sends a strong team including last year’s winner Shiho Nakashima, Soko Yamaoka and Rana Okada.

In the men’s competition, it seems that the armada from the land of the rising sun gets ready to dominate the superpipe. Besides 2009 World Champion Ryoh Aono and last year’s competition ruler Kohhei Kudoh some more top pros from Nippon will drop in: Kazuhiro Kokubo, Daisuke Murakami and Kohdai Watanabe. They will spin and style against Finnish rippers Markku Koski, an Olympic Bronze medallist of 2006, Antti Autti, Peetu Piiroinen, Janne Korpi and Risto Mattila. In addition, Luke Mitrani and Mason Aguirre from the USA will try to rock the show.

But there are even more guys being able to perform on an international top level: Mathieu Crepel (FRA), Christophe Schmidt (GER) as well as Nathan Johnstone from Australia and Canada’s 2009 World Championship silver medallist Jeff Batchelor and his team mates Crispin Lipscomb and Justin Lamoureux aim for the podium just like Switzerland’s Iouri Podladtchikov, Rolf Feldmann and Christian Haller. New Zealand pins its hopes on James Hamilton who was the only “kiwi” making it to the final of the top twelve athletes in Cardrona last year.

The best well-known Finnish snowboarding event was carried at Ruka hill between 30th of April and 2nd of May. As usual it gathered the Finnish snowboarding scene to take the best out of the last days of the season with great riding combined with unforgettable parties.

Every year a competition is held in a crazy snowpark in Ruka. This year’s podium winners are:

1. Antti Autti
2. Otto Veijola
3. Ville Uotila

Check out the official website for more details and some pics.

Last weekend, more than 100 riders from Finland gathered to the TTR Finnish Open, all the way up at Tahko. Top names like Heikki Sorsa, Peetu Piiroinen, Matti Kinnunen and Risto Mattila pimped up the event with their appearance, ready to fight for the US$ 10,000 prize-purse!

But pouring rain and gusty winds forced the organizers of the TTR Finnish Open to move the qualification heats from Friday to Saturday. The weather got slightly better on Saturday – still very windy but good enough for an informal jibbing contest. The field was absolutely stacked as Scandinavia’s best jibbers were in attendance.

The course consisted of a rustic up-rail, some A-frame kind of log and a corner jump. A.R.C. rider Matti Kinnunen showed max creativity during the entire jam session and ended up on top of the podium.

On Sunday, the sky cleared up and the slopestyle contest got under way. The top ten result list comprised a pretty strong who’s who of snowboarding, with just a couple of the big names missing. Again, Matti took the top spot of the official slopestyle contest thanks to his huge and perfectly stuck BS rodeos. He also won the “highest air” category.

Coming in second place was Burton frontman Heikki Sorsa with a super-high BS 360 over the corner, winning the “Best Trick Award”.

“I am really stoked to win this contest, looking at all these big names who showed up“, a happy Matti Kinnunen stated after the contest. “I have been working a lot on my new board model which will be coming out next autumn and constantly tried new tricks throughout the entire season. Looks like this combination worked out great so far.”

The result of the final heat Slopestyle:

1.Matti Kinnunen
2.Heikki Sorsa
3.Aleksi Partanen
4.Miikka Hast
